SABS lleva la música de barbershop a profesores de música en España
La Asociación Española de Cantantes de Barbershop (SABS), en cooperación con el Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), tiene el placer de anunciar el lanzamiento de la primera edición de materiales educativas de barbershop en español, la Guía y libro de canciones barbershop para profesores de música. Dirigido a educadores de música y directores de coros, la guía presenta un resumen del estilo de la música barbershop, incluyendo pautas de técnica vocal, los rangos recomendados para arreglos de barbershop y consideraciones interpretativas. También está incluido partituras arregladas en el estilo de barbershop—muchas de ellas en español—y cada una con sus audios de aprendizaje correspondientes.
Con la dirección de Steve Scott, director de programas educativas de BHS, el presidente de SABS, Ángel Rodríguez y miembro de SABS, Kara Martín, tradujeron todos los materiales para crear la guía en español. Arreglistas de barbershop Steve Tramack, Eric Dalby, Adam Scott, y Kohl Kitzmiller han contribuido sus arreglos a la guía. Todos los materiales están disponibles a través de la página web de SABS: www.sabs.es.

SABS está dedicada a la educación y práctica de la música barbershop y entre sus programas cuentan con talleres para enseñar su estilo como Sing Harmony in a Day, así como el evento educativo Harmony College, donde los participantes gozan de un fin de semana de aprendizaje con profesores expertos en el estilo barbershop. El concurso anual para coros y cuartetos nacionales e internacionales, En Armonía, se celebra cada primavera en España. Este año, se celebrará en Calpe el 13-16 de abril. SABS brings barbershop to music educators in Spain
The Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS), in cooperation with the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS), is pleased to announce the publication of the first edition of barbershop learning materials in Spanish, La Guía y Libro de Canciones Barbershop para Profesores de Música. Written for music educators and chorus directors, the guide presents an introductory explanation of the barbershop style, vocal techniques for successful harmonization and performance recommendations. The accompanying songbook offers 7 arrangements and learning tracks, many in Spanish, of music to delight and instruct singers new to barbershop.
Under the direction of Steve Scott, director of educational programs at BHS, SABS President, Ángel Rodríguez Rivero, and SABS member, Kara Martín, translated the guidebook for the Spanish market. Barbershop arrangers Steve Tramack, Eric Dalby, Adam Scott and Kohl Kitzmiller provided Spanish arrangements and learning tracks. Materials are available upon completion of a short form on the SABS website: www.sabs.es.
Ángel Rodríguez Rivero commented on the materials stating, “By providing a guidebook and barbershop songs for Spanish music educators and chorus directors, SABS hopes to reach a new generation of singers in Spain with this internationally-renowned style of a cappella music.”

The Barbees this month are celebrating their singers and directors who have been with the chorus for 10 years or more.
At our first rehearsal of 2023 last Saturday, The Barbees congratulated 13 members with pink carnations and applause to honor their many years of sharing their voices and talents with Madrid´s only chorus dedicated to singing barbershop music.
In 2023, Co-Director, Kara Martín, and assistant bass section leader, Laura Romero, will be celebrating 13 years with the chorus.
Ángel Rodríguez Rivero is reaching 12 years as director of The Barbees.
Baritone section leader, Emma González Herrero, tenor Lucila González Herrero and baritone Marisol Torres are marking 11 years singing with The Barbees.
And thanks to the success of the Sing Harmony in a Day session, organized in Madrid in 2013 with the help of the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers (SABS), and led by the then-SABS president, Gail Grainger, and members Barbara Burks, JoAnn Scott and Lyn Baines, we are celebrating the 10th anniversary of a number of Barbees! The majority of the following Barbees attended that event in 2013: leads Alicia Pertegás, Carmen Martínez and Paloma Navarro ; bass Cindy Freeman; tenor Cristina Ruiz; and baritones Luisa Rojas Cervantes and Marisa Castilla.
These veteran Barbees and directors join President Paulette Flahavin who celebrated her 20th anniversary with the chorus last fall. The event was commemorated with a surprise ceremony during rehearsal where a video of Barbees past and present shared their admiration for Paulette's years of service and singing with the chorus.
The Barbees wish them all many more years of happy singing!

La mayoría de las siguientes Barbees asistieron a este evento en 2013: las leads Alicia Pertegás, Carmen Martínez y Paloma Navarro; la baja Cindy Freeman; la tenor Cristina Ruiz; y las barítonas Luisa Rojas Cervantes y Marisa Castilla.

La temporada de conciertos Navideños para The Barbees llega a su punto más alto este sábado, 17 de diciembre a las 17:00, con su actuación en el histórico Monasterio de El Paular en Rascafría, situado en la sierra de Madrid.
Ángel Rodríguez Rivero, veterano director del coro, estará acompañado al frente del coro por Kara Martín, que debuta este mes como co-directora de The Barbees.
Ángel y Kara dirigirán el coro en un programa variado de arreglos de barbershop y de otros estilos a cappella de entrañables villancicos de los EEUU, España y otras partes de Europa en el concierto del sábado, seguido por nuestro cuarto y último concierto de estas fiestas el domingo, 18 de diciembre a las 18:00, al aire libre en Plaza Nueva, Bravo Murillo 107, Madrid.
El nuevo rol de Kara culmina sus tres años como directora adjunta, y la terminación con éxito en junio de su Máster en Dirección y Pedagogía Coral de la Universidad Internacional de la Rioja, UNIR. Kara lleva también más de 10 años en The Barbees cantando en la cuerda de leads.
En su presentación al coro este otoño de su nueva asociación directiva, Kara y Ángel expresaron su entusiasmo genuino por la oportunidad de trabajar juntos hacía el objetivo de apoyar y educar a cada cantante en The Barbees, un paso importante en su emocionante tarea de llevar el coro a nuevos niveles de actuación musical.
The Barbees sing Christmas with new directing duo
The Barbees´ Christmas concert season reaches a high point on Saturday, 17 December at 17:00, with a performance in the historical Monasterio de El Paular in Rascafría, located in the sierra north of Madrid.
Ángel Rodríguez Rivero, veteran chorus director, will be joined in front of the chorus by Kara Martín, who is making her debut this month as co-director of The Barbees.
Ángel and Kara will direct the chorus in a varied program of barbershop and other a cappella arrangements of beloved Christmas carols from the US, Spain and other parts of Europe at the Saturday concert in El Paular, followed by our fourth and final holiday concert on Sunday, December 18, at 18:00, outdoors in Plaza Nueva, Bravo Murillo 107, Madrid.
Kara´s new role caps her three years as assistant director, and her successful completion in June of a Master´s Degree in Choral Direction and Pedagogy from the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja, UNIR. Kara has also sung the lead voice part with the chorus for more than 10 years.
In their presentation to the chorus earlier this term about their new directing partnership, Kara and Ángel expressed genuine enthusiasm for the opportunity to work in tandem toward the objective of building up and educating each singer in The Barbees as part of the exciting work of taking the chorus to greater heights in musical performance.

The Barbees congratulate assistant director Kara Martín for successfully completing this month a Master´s Degree in Choral Direction and Pedagogy from the Universidad Internacional de la Rioja, UNIR.
Desiring to gain technical expertise in directing and to add to the “things I´ve learned from the barbershop perspective,” Kara began investigating choral directing programs during the lockdown period of the Covid pandemic.
After seeing an introductory webinar by Dr Nuria Fernández, an award-winning Spanish choral director and educator, Kara chose UNIR´s eight-month-long online course created and directed by Fernández.
“Nuria said her program is demanding because she wants everyone who completes it to be a good ambassador for the Master´s. That sold me,” Kara said.
Fernández was true to her word.
Not too many weeks into the classes on directing technique, in particular, Kara wondered if she was going to make it to the end. “It was daunting. I thought I´d bitten off more than I can chew.”
But she kept at it. “I´m stubborn,” she said.
Kara continually practiced the nuanced directing gestures that Fernández was teaching the class of nearly 30 students—including working choral and orchestra conductors from Spain, Columbia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and the US—via video and live online classes.
Kara´s husband laughed when they would go out on a walk and she would be waving her arms, directing a silent song that was running in her head, one that she would have to video herself directing for feedback and a grade.
About three months into the program, the directing techniques began to click.
“Nuria´s feedback was great. I started understanding what I wasn´t doing well.”
And that understanding led to dramatic improvement in her directing technique, which Kara said is the basis for the entire program, and something she will be sharing with The Barbees. In addition, the Master´s gave her an entire box of warm-up, listening and vocal technique tools to share with the chorus that has been part of her life since 2008.
But even with a new advanced degree in hand, Kara insists the learning is only starting.
“It was humbling to see how much there is to learn,” she said, adding, “I was very sad when my last class ended. But the beauty of it is that this is the beginning of a lifetime pursuit of a newfound passion.”

The Barbees dan su enhorabuena a su directora adjunta Kara Martín por haber completado con éxito este mes su Máster en Dirección y Pedagogía Coral de la Universidad Internacional de la Rioja, UNIR.
Con el deseo de adquirir conocimiento técnico al dirigir, y queriendo complementar “lo que he aprendido del mundo barbershop”, Kara empezó a buscar programas de formación de dirección coral durante el periodo de confinamiento de la pandemia.
Después de haber visto un video de introducción de Dra Nuria Fernández, una directora y educadora española galardonada en el ámbito coral, Kara eligió el programa online de ocho meses creada y dirigida por Fernández.
“Nuria explicó que su programa es exigente porque quiere que todo el mundo que salga con el titulo sea un buen embajador del Máster. Me convenció,” dijo Kara.
Fernández fue fiel a su palabra.
Después de no muchas semanas de clases, sobre todo las de técnica de dirección, Kara se preguntó si iba a poder terminar el programa. “Fue abrumador. Pensé que había abarcado más de lo que podría.”
Pero siguió. “Soy cabezota,” dijo.
No paraba de practicar los gestos matizados que Fernández estaba enseñando a la clase de casi 30 estudiantes—incluyendo directores y conductores de corales y orquestas de España, Colombia, la Republica Dominicana, México, Perú y los EEUU—a través de videos y clases en directo por internet.
El marido de Kara se reía durante paseos cuando Kara movía sus brazos, dirigiendo una canción silenciosa que sonaba solo en su cabeza, alguna que luego tendría que hacer un video de ella dirigiendo para feedback y nota.
Después de tres meses del programa, las técnicas de dirección empezaron a tener sentido.
“Los comentarios de Nuria fueron de gran ayuda. Empecé a entender lo que no estaba haciendo bien.”
Y este entendimiento llevó a una mejora dramática en su técnica de dirección, lo cual dijo Kara es la base del programa, y algo que compartirá con The Barbees. Además, el Máster le dio una caja entera de herramientas relacionadas con la escucha y técnica vocal para compartir con el coro que ha sido parte de su vida desde 2008.
Pero incluso con un nuevo título avanzado en mano, Kara insiste que el aprendizaje esta solo comenzando.
“Fue una lección de humildad ver cuánto hay para aprender,” dijo Kara, añadiendo, “Estaba muy triste cuando mi última clase terminó. Pero lo mejor de todo es que esto es el principio de una búsqueda de por vida de una nueva pasión.”
- The Barbees de nuevo en el Teatro Tribueñe

The Barbees celebraron su vuelta al Teatro Tribueñe en Madrid el 9 de diciembre con una historia inspiradora de la pandemia, poniendo el cierre a su temporada de conciertos 2021 con una ovación y la petición de dos bises.
El coro empezó su espectáculo del mismo modo que había terminado su debut en el escenario del Teatro Tribueñe en enero 2020, cantando la canción Shine del grupo pop británico Take That.
Después hubo un vistazo entre bambalinas de los meses de confinamiento a través de un video alegre que mostró la determinación del grupo en sus ensayos online de mantenerse unidos, de aprender nuevas destrezas y nueva música.
El programa de Tribueñe incluía tres canciones que el coro aprendió durante el confinamiento.
Entre las 31 cantantes en el escenario, hubo tres nuevas que se han afiliado al grupo durante los meses entre abril 2020 y junio 2021 cuando el coro ensayó regularmente a través Zoom.
La temporada 2021 de conciertos empezó con dos actuaciones en el Teatro Real en Madrid el 14 de noviembre, seguido por un concierto en Alcorcón el 30 de noviembre, y un concierto benéfico para las British Ladies' Association en la Catedral Anglicana El Redentor el 2 de diciembre.
The Barbees are back at Teatro Tribueñe
The Barbees celebrated their return to the Teatro Tribueñe stage in Madrid on 9 December with an uplifting pandemic story, bringing to a close their 2021 concert season with a standing ovation and two encores.The chorus began the show the way it had finished its debut on the Tribueñe stage in January 2020—singing pop group Take That´s “Shine”.
Next came a behind-the-scenes peek at the months of pandemic lockdown shown through a lighthearted video highlighting The Barbees' determination through weekly online rehearsals, to not only stay together as a chorus, but to learn new skills and new music.
The Tribueñe program featured three songs the chorus learned during lockdown.
Among the 31 singers onstage were three new chorus members who joined The Barbees during the months between April 2020 and June 2021 when the chorus rehearsed regularly through Zoom.
The Barbees' 2021 concert season began with two performances at Madrid´s Royal Theater on 14 November, followed by a concert in Alcorcón on 30 November, and a benefit concert for the British Ladies' Association at the Anglican Cathedral in Madrid on 2 December.

The Barbees comenzaron su vuelta al escenario a lo grande—cantando dos pases con aforo completo en el Teatro Real en Madrid, el domingo, 14 de noviembre.
Después de casi dos años sin cantar al público debido a la pandemia, The Barbees actuaron en el programa Todos Amamos a Parténope, el taller familiar dedicado a la opera de Händel, Parténope, sobre la sirena que fundó la ciudad de Nápoles.
Caracterizadas como sirenitas que hechizan con su canto, The Barbees cantaron un programa variado de arreglos en el estilo barbershop de canciones del Great American Songbook, los Beatles y hasta Eres Tú. Finalizaron su actuación con una versión góspel del Aleluya más famoso de todos los tiempos—el de Händel. María Ceballos, también cantante en el coro, nos acompañó al piano en este animado final.
El programa forma parte de ¡Todos a la Gayarre!, la serie de actividades didácticas paralelas a las operas en el Teatro Real, creado y dirigido desde hace 10 años por Fernando Palacios.

The Barbees return to the stage, singing at Royal Theater
The Barbees returned to the stage with two sold-out performances at Madrid´s Royal Theater, Sunday, 14 November.
After nearly two years of no public performances due to the pandemic, The Barbees sang in the program, Todos Amamos a Parténope (Everyone Loves Parténope), an interactive family activity dedicated to Händel´s opera, Parténope, which tells the story of the mermaid who founded Naples, Italy.
Billed as mermaids who enchant with their singing, The Barbees performed a varied program of barbershop arrangements of songs from the Great American Songbook, the Beatles, and Eres Tú. The chorus ended with a gospel version of the world´s most famous Hallelujah—Handel´s! Barbee María Ceballos accompanied on the piano for this uplifting finale.
The program is part of the series, ¡Todos a la Gayarre! (Everyone to the Gayarre!). Fernando Palacios has created and directed this series of workshops for children about the operas staged by the Royal Theater for over 10 years.

The Barbees are pleased to announce the WORLD PREMIERE of our latest virtual video! This Friday, April 9 at 22:00 (CEST), we will show the world how to "Straighten Up and Fly Right." Tom Gentry, barbershopper extraordinaire, coached The Barbees via Zoom this week. An arranger, director, music judge and singer, Tom Gentry has been immersed in the world of barbershop music for 56 years, and on Friday evening, he generously shared his expertise and unbound enthusiasm with The Barbees.
What's Tom's golden rule? Each song is an opportunity to have fun singing and to connect with the audience by telling the song's story. The two go hand in hand. This is a rule to sing by!
El coach de barbershop Tom Gentry dirigió una sesión de aprendijaze con The Barbees vía Zoom esta semana. El arreglista, cantante, director y juez, Tom Gentry lleva 56 años inmerso en el mundo del barbershop, y el viernes compartió muy generosamente su experiencia y entusiasmo por este estilo de música con nuestro coro.
¿Cual es la regla de oro de Tom? Cada canción es una oportunidad de disfrutar del canto y de conectar con el público a través de la historia de la canción. Las dos cosas van de la mano. ¡The Barbees no la van a olvidar!

Este año, The Barbees ha colaborado con la Asociación Manos de Ayuda Social, reuniendo dinero para una labor tan importante, como es alimentar a las personas que lo necesitan, sobre todo en estos tiempos tan difíciles, en los que muchas familias no tienen recursos para algo tan básico, como la alimentación. Este año, muchas personas han perdido sus trabajos, y por lo tanto, sus medios de vida. Pero la Asociación Manos de Ayuda Social hace mucho por ayudarles desde su comedor, en Calle de la Reina de África, 10 Portal B Local 2, 28018 https://manosayudasocial.org/
Annie y Marion han sido las encargadas de entregarles nuestra contribución y han visitado con Ruth las instalaciones donde se ayuda a tantas personas cada día.

This year, many people have lost their jobs, and therefore their livelihoods. Un Ensayo de Cine
Hoy The Barbees tuvimos el placer de dar la bienvenida al actor, director y guionista Alber Ponte en una MasterClass de "Como Sentir Una Canción." Nos ha dado unas pautas fantásticas para continuar formándonos como cantantes/actores en el escenario. Today The Barbees had the pleasure of welcoming the actor, director and screenwriter Alber Ponte to a MasterClass rehearsal about "Bringing Feeling to a Song." He gave us some amazing tips for our continuing development as actor/singers on stage. Our Lead, Gemma Gálvez, made this event possible and we won´t soon forget this special rehearsal.

¡Este verano, un cuarteto emergió de la cuarentena con ganas de cantar! Tomaron los caminos rurales en las afueras de Madrid para cantar sobre sus deseos de regresar a sus raíces.: "Country roads, llévame a casa, al sitio donde pertenezco" El cuarteto está formado por Ángel Rodríguez, Cristina Ruiz, Paulette Flahavin y Kara Martín.
This summer a quartet emerged singing from the lockdown. They hit the rural roads on the outskirts of Madrid to sing about their yearning for home: "Country roads, take me home, to the place I belong." Aunque la pandemia nos haya parado muchas actividades—incluso nuestro concurso nacional, no nos para nuestras voces—¡al menos desde casa! El 13 de junio, abrimos el escenario de Zoom para The Barbees Virtual Scratch Quartet Showcase. Estrenamos 13 videos musicales hechos por ocho cuartetos del coro formados al azar, un duo y cantantes individuales que hicieron multitracks, o sea, una cantante cantando las cuatro voces de la canción.
Tuvimos un jurado de lujo formado por nuestro director, Ángel Rodríguez Rivero, y el juez invitado, Nico de las Peñas. Ambos son fundadores de nuestra asociación, the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers, y ganadores del concurso nacional de cuartetos, Ellos premiaron ocho videos, incluyendo ellos con la mejor presentación, musicalidad y canto, además del acorde más brillante, la destreza tecnológica más destacable y el mejor multitrack. También hubo un premio del público.
While the pandemic has stopped many of our activiies, including our annual national convention, it hasn´t quieted our voices! On June 13, The Barbees held our first Virtual Scratch Quartet Showcase via Zoom. We premiered 13 musical videos created by eight quartets, all formed randomly, one duo and individual singers who made multitracks, in other words, these singers sang all four voice parts of a song.
Our distinguished panel of judges included our director, Ángel Rodríguez Rivero, and our invited judge, Nico de las Peñas. Both are founding members of our national association, the Spanish Association of Barbershop Singers, and winners of the national quartet competition. They awarded eight videos, including those for best musicality, performance and singing, as well as for the best-ringing chord, technological skill and the best multitrack. During the lockdown, The Barbees created a video to celebrate all of their loved ones and fans who blew out their candles at home.
